A Look at The White Wolf of Icicle Creek

HeRinteractive's 16th game in the Nancy Drew Adventure series is The White Wolf of Icicle Creek, abbreviated ICE. It's a pretty good game, specially if it's winter. ;)

HeR's own site says "Nancy Drew travels to the Canadian Rockies to investigate the Icicle Creek Lodge. Chantal, the owner of the lodge has asked her to uncover the culprit behind a recent string of suspicious accidents. A wolf also appears at the site of accidents and then mysteriously disappears when the police arrive. As Nancy makes her way to the lodge, an explosion rocks the night. A wolf howls mournfully in the distance. Nancy has barely set foot on the premises and already trouble is afoot! Can Nancy solve this mystery before all the guests leave and Chantal is left out in the cold?"

...And that's pretty much it. Of course, then you get into the heart of the game, which manages to crams in everything from a snow ball fight to almost dying from hypothermia. Personally I've always thought the best part is the wolf, though:

Random Fact

This time of year things are pretty slow in the world of Nancy, Frank and Joe, at least from the fans point of view. While HeRinteractive works on new games for us to enjoy, and Carolyn Keene and Franklin Dixon ghostwriters work diligently on the new series Nancy Drew Diaries and the Hardy Boys Adventures, we have to sit back and mull over the older books and games.

I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, in fact I really enjoy having a marathon and going through all the Nancy Drew games before the newest release. But in the process, you often find bizarre, comical, and enjoyable little things. So I’m launching a new blog series: Random Fact, In which I’ll point out a random thing from one of the many Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys resources. I’m going to try to this as a weekly thing, but probably not on any specific day. ^.^

For this week, I’m going to mention a rather random thing I found out about a month ago on the Nancy Drew Sleuths site. Thanks to NDSleuths for being a absolutely fantastic source for sleuth info. :D

Anyways, the American Girl doll, Molly, is apparently a fan of Nancy Drew! In one of the older Molly sets you could get a miniature copy of The Quest of the Missing Map with the original cover art from 1942 (Molly’s is from 1944).

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone! *takes out noisemaker* 2012 here we are! Is everyone ready for another fun filled year of our favorite sleuth's adventures?

Most newspapers and such like to recap what has happened in the past year, but I'm going to take a slightly different approach and list some of the things to come in 2012, both for the blog and in the sleuth world.

On the Nancy Drew games front, we have the release of Tomb of the Lost Queen just around the corner. News of Castle Finster should be approaching as well. And who knows what HeR has planned in way of contests, puzzles, and the fall game.

As far as new paperback adventures for Nancy and the Hardys, the Girl Detective and Undercover Brothers series finish up in January and February, respectfully. Hopefully we'll see traces of the replacement series before the end of the year, though we probably won't see the first books until 2013.

As far as the blog, I'm still working on the music player, pretty much my only blog improving project. I'm always trying to improve though, so if you have any suggestions, let me know. ;)

Websites and Blog Improvements

Recently found a really awesome Hardy Boys site: www.hardyboysonline.net.

So, I added it too the gigantic list of sites I have over there. --> ;)

Which brings us quiet neatly to said list. I'd just to say, while I have the chance, that if you have or know of a good Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys site, feel free to post a comment about it. I'll gladly take a look at it and stick it over there. :)

There's a few other things I've been working on for the blog, including a music player with the Relient K song, the tracks from the 2007 movie, and some from the Nancy Drew games. I don't know when it's go up, but it's definitely going to appear, sooner or later, so let me know it there's any other track that you'd like on it.

Sleuth Thoughts on Koko Kringles

The Koko Kringle bars from the Nancy Drew games are legendary:

And recently, HeR has even started to sell real copies! So, the only question is, what do our favorite trio think of this?

Nancy: I love Koko Kringles! Wait- you've never had one? Whoa...

Frank: Nice. That reminds, I need to restock... *types something into iPhone* Just because careful you don't eat too many. Joe makes himself woozy sometimes... *glares at Joe*

Joe: Oh, came on. *rolls eyes* Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have any extras, would you?

A Look at the Nancy Drew Movie

The movie opens up with Nancy solving the standard River Heights mystery. It serves to introduce this Nancy to the audience in a rather comical fashion, all but screaming: Nancy Drew, super sleuth with everything from one of Hannah's lemon bars to basic rapelling equipment on hand. The whole crew make a short appearance, but sadly, Ned is the only one to be seen for the rest of the movie, while Bess and George disappear completely. You also get a look at Nancy's convertible, a blue 1960 Nash Metropolitan convertible. Immediate complications, Carson makes Nancy promise him not to sleuth anymore, at least while they're in California.

The first ten minutes of the movie nail home the point fast: Nancy is a slightly short teen detective who acts and dresses old fashioned, at one point even telling Ned that the movie actress is "before your time." Of course, once Nancy hits California, this creates problems. For Nancy it means having a hard time with the 'normal kids' in her new school. For viewers who have read any of the books, it means screaming out loud "This is not Nancy!". Of course, they're all dead right, Nancy always moved with the times, whether that meant a change of dress in the 50s or getting a cell phone for the 2000s. What the movie attempts to show you is a classic Nancy from small little River Heights (time frozen town?) who has been catapulted straight into modern day LA. If you can get over that, or at least make light of it, you'll probably enjoy the rest movie. If your having trouble with it, or the fact the Hannah has a thick accent, the rest of the movie is gonna be pretty hard to swallow.

In California, Nancy settles into Dehlia Draycott's estate, despite Carson's inclination towards just going to the Four Seasons after Nancy hears someone creeping around the house. The mystery surrounds the disappearance, reappearance, and then death of Dehlia, a famous actress approximately 20 years ago. It's not the most original plot, or the most used, so it works. Of course, since Nancy is no longer sleuthing, all this doesn't matter. ^.~

Meanwhile, Nancy makes a splash at her new school, by being 'Pretty Much Amazing'. Two girls, Inga and Trish, and Inga's brother Corky take main stage by initially making fun of Nancy, but eventually becoming her friends.

Of course, Nancy's sleuthing instincts can't be suppressed for long, and the mystery comes full force, complete with murder attempts, hidden passageways, a car chase (in which Nancy insists on driving the speed limit ^.~), and a kidnapping.

Mid-case, Ned drives Nancy's car to California for a short vacation. The relationship between Ned and Nancy is awkward, specially with Corky around. But it gives the rest of us laughs, and he manages to help with the case.

In the end, Nancy manages to solve the case, find Dehlia's long lost will, help Dehlia's daughter Jane, tell her father that she's snooping, and patch things up with Ned back in River Heights. At the end, another case is hinted at, and thus continues the never ending cycle of mystery. ^.^

The good: The dialogue and acting is well done, with occasional moments of brilliance. One thing I noticed is the music. In itself, it's nothing special, mostly standard teen pop. But it fits the movie fantastically. This applies to the opening and closing credits, with classic Nancy Drew images customized with Emma Roberts while Flunk's version of 'Blue Monday' is played. Later, the tune returns as Nancy returns to sleuthing.

The bad: Clichés are common, as are plot holes. But it many ways it simply follows the path of the books.

A sequel?: Back in 2007, when the movie was released, a sequel was promised, and Emma Roberts had signed on for one. Now, almost five years later, there hasn't been any more info on it. The movie wasn't a big success, so it's likely that Warner Brothers decided to just cut their loses.

Overall: it's not a complete loss, and if you can keep from taking it too seriously, it's pretty enjoyable. You may not watch it more than once, but once isn't a waste of time, even if it isn't your thing.

Nancy in ATAC Update

A few weeks ago, I posted about Nancy joining ATAC. Cruising the boards the other day, I actually found a petition for it! Unfortunately, it's pretty old and inactive. There are a few other small ones, but they never took off and they're all too old. So I made a new one. ;)

While I was back on this project, I pocked around the net for Nancy in ATAC references. I was hoping for a fanfaction, but no luck. *winkwink*

Sleuth Scoop's Holiday Gift Guide

Girl Detective!
Even though this series is officially cancelled, it's still a treasure. Nancy got an update, complete with a hybrid car (still the most famous color: blue) and a cell phone. And of course, there just happens to be a collector's set with the first four models. ^.^

And, yes, there's the exact same thing for Hardy Boys lovers. However, they got the cool group name, since the package is officially known as the "Spy Set". ^.~
Super Mystery!
And, of course, the best of the three best: together! The fifth and most likely last in the series; Nancy, Frank, and Joe are back at it!

Clues to Sleuthing!
Whether you've read every Nancy Drew book published, or not a single one, this is the ultimate book to have. Filled with sleuthing facts from the original series to either introduce you to the series or jog your memory, it rocks!

Nancy Drew Text Challenge #2

HeR started a new contest, the Nancy Drew Text Challenge #2. I'm not going to post any spoilers, but if you need help, there's a giant thread on the HeR Message Boards. Good luck!

One note I'd like to make on this new challenge though, is you can only participate if your with a specific carrier. Personally, I have Textfree on my iPod Touch, so when the first text challenge started, that's what I used. Unfortunately, since their running it off of a five digit number this time, anyone with textfree, and similar providers, as well as small providers won't be able to participate. :(

The winner will be announced in January, so good luck!
